New Executive Director Shares Her Vision for A New Journey
Diahann Klein, MA was appointed Executive Director of A New Journey Eating Disorder Center in Santa Monica, CA in June 2011. An advocate, therapist, treatment consultant, and speaker, Klein has brought her unique perspective, experience and passion together to shape her vision for the organization. She is responsible for the overall operations of A New Journey.
“We’re thrilled to have such a passionate person leading our eating disorder treatment program,” said A New Journey’s Vice President, Deb Hughes, CAS, “Diahann’s valuable skill set and leadership abilities are a great asset to our program as a whole.”
Klein’s own personal journey through an eating disorder (ED) has fueled her desire to help others. A graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont, and the London School of Economics and Political Science, Klein pursued her master’s degree in Psychology from Antioch University in Los Angeles and defined the early stages of her career by working in various mental health settings as a therapist for children and families.
This background, coupled with her business and clinical expertise, has enabled Klein to assemble a treatment staff and program that builds upon traditional clinical approaches, while employing emerging therapeutic techniques, including media literacy, experiential therapies and holistic methodologies, to provide clients with a comprehensive treatment and recovery plan. She believes that individualized, patient-centered treatment can help the ED patient get to the real, deep-core issues that manifest themselves in eating and co-occurring disorders.
“Bringing a sense of community to recovery compels the client to do the hard work and not just count the days to discharge,” says Klein. “That is what I impress upon the staff of A New Journey. Each person is exceptional. There is no magic formula. Someone can’t heal without going through their own unique experience.”
Klein’s combination of clinical knowledge and business acumen has resulted in significant advancement for A New Journey over the last few months. She has added a second home to the program, established a 13-hour extended partial hospital program, and is in the process of expanding the service offerings of the facility.
Klein is an active member of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (iaedp), and is currently the President of the Los Angeles Chapter. She is a member of the California Association of Marriage & Family Therapists (CAMFT) and the Women’s Association of Addiction Treatment (WAAT).
Prior to joining A New Journey, Klein worked extensively in politics and entertainment. She founded and acted as President of D.J. Klein Mgmt. Co., a NYC based company with an Entertainment Management Division in New York that represents over 150 entertainers, as well as a Real Estate Development Division in Connecticut.
Klein lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Tom, and their daughter, Piper.
